Capuchin Province of Saint Augustine 150th Anniversary

In 1873, three Capuchin friars came from Bavaria to found a new Capuchin community in Pittsburgh. This venture became the Capuchin Province of Saint Augustine and in 1991 the Province came to Saint John Church in Philadelphia. The friars plan to celebrate this anniversary at Saint John’s on Sunday August 6 at the 12:30 Mass. Those served by Capuchins at Holy Redeemer and in Frankford will also be invited. A social will follow in the parish center.

We hope that most parishioners will attend Mass and join the celebration at Saint John this Sunday, August 6. On August 6 we will have ONE Mass at Holy Redeemer at 11:15. Father Jin will preside and the Mass will be in English and Chinese.

Holy Redeemer’s Participation in the Ben to the Shore Bike Ride

Holy Redeemer was well represented in the Ben to the Shore bike ride July 23rd to benefit the families of the first responders (fire fighters, police, and EMTs), including our own parishioner, Andy Chan. Alumni, staff, and friends numbered a dozen and a half or so and raised over $9000. Our kindergarten teacher, Ms. Raquel Romana, not only participated in the trek, but also designed the shirts for the group for the 65 mile trip from the Ben Franklin Square Park, Philadelphia, to Atlantic City, NJ. See the school website and our Facebook for photos of which more will be added.

Holy Redeemer Annual Banquet Save the Date

Holy Redeemer School Spotlight

School starts up on Wednesday, Sept 6, 2023. Now is the time to enroll your child at our fine school.

The school classrooms, the cafeteria, and the Angelus House have been repainted by 25 volunteers including 21 from PECO and Fr. Tom and HR alumni and friends on July 28 thanks to the leadership of Katherine Ngee who spearheaded this project with PECO and coordinated the effort. Alumni and friends also did the preparations the weekdays before July 28th to get the rooms ready for the painting. Photo attached. (NOTE: Al Lee took the picture and I photoshopped him into the picture.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Spotlight

In April 2023, armed conflict broke out between two warring factions in Sudan. The ongoing war has displaced over 3 million people internally and into neighboring countries. The resulting humanitarian crisis has limited people’s access to food, clean water, healthcare and shelter. As the rainy season approaches, there’s an increased risk of disease outbreaks, compounded by a lack of access to healthcare in many parts of Sudan. Challenges, including insecurity, bureaucratic access impediments and looting of humanitarian supplies, are hampering aid delivery.

Despite the challenging security context in Sudan, CRS and partners in Central Darfur provide life-saving assistance. Over the past 3 months, CRS has distributed 2,942.5 metric tons of food from the World Food Programme to over 100,000 people in Central Darfur. Additionally, CRS and our partners in Central Darfur delivered medical supplies to 21 healthcare facilities to ensure they are well-stocked. Through this support, we anticipate nearly 40,000 people will benefit from improved food security. Please visit www.crs.org for more information!
